Company’s Statement
Lucid Motors has firmly denied a report suggesting it is contemplating filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Nick Twork, the chief communications officer, stated that the rumors are “completely false.” He emphasized that the company possesses sufficient liquidity to sustain operations well into the next year, as indicated in its recent quarterly filings. Twork also mentioned that no special Board committee has been formed to explore the scenarios mentioned in the report.
Stock Market Reaction
The denial from Lucid comes on the heels of a significant drop in its stock price, which fell more than 50% on Tuesday, marking its largest intra-day decline to date. However, the stock has since recovered slightly, trading at $4.72 per share, approximately 14% lower than its opening price.
Recent Changes and Challenges
This year, Lucid Motors has undergone substantial restructuring, including the appointment of a new CEO and the layoff of over 2,000 employees. These changes come as the company prepares to launch a more affordable electric SUV later this year. Despite these efforts, Lucid has struggled to attract buyers for its luxury electric vehicles, even with impressive technological features.
Consulting Firm Involvement
Earlier reports suggested that Lucid was contemplating bankruptcy or going private based on advice from consulting firm AlixPartners. Twork clarified that AlixPartners is only assisting Lucid in strengthening its operations and has not recommended bankruptcy to management or the Board.
Production Adjustments
In light of the current market conditions, Lucid Motors announced it would eliminate a second production shift at its Arizona factory to better align production plans with anticipated demand. In the second quarter of this year, the company delivered 3,953 vehicles, a slight increase from the same period last year.
Future Plans
Lucid Motors is also working on launching a luxury robotaxi service by the end of this year, in collaboration with partners Uber and Nuro. Uber has committed to purchasing at least 35,000 Nuro-equipped Lucid vehicles over the next few years, which includes 10,000 Gravity SUVs and 25,000 vehicles based on the upcoming midsize electric platform.
